THE LAST PLANET BEET GIG
(and Jason's Birthday)
featuring UM, Stuffy & the Fuses,
Polariss, Dave Jago, Trev Hurley, Tommy Twist
and very special guests..
(DOORS OPEN AT 7:30pm)
Yes, it's true, after 211 Planet Beet gigs, this really will be the last one. We may or may not return in the future. We just don't know yet. Please come and make this last Planet Beet night one to truly remember, for all the RIGHT reasons!! You must surely all know UM by now right? Sometimes funny, sometimes surreal lyrics over wonky/funky beats that sound like they're played on a broken CD player. Pure genius. Stuffy/Fuses play angular, yelping pop songs, with the noise elements of Fugazi, and the quirkiness of The Cardiacs, fronted by an almost-standing singing drummer called Stuffy, who also happens to be Graham Coxon's drummer. The rest of the acts will only be playing a few songs each, and we're opening at 7:30pm to fit in as much as possible. PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY SO YOU DON'T MISS ANYTHING!!

The Luminaire and Blang presents
SETH OF DUFUS
+ Filthy Pedro and The Intolerable Kidd
+ UM
+ Lou Psyche
The Luminaire is located at:
311 High Road
Kilburn
London NW6 7JR
Doors 8.00
£6 via WeGotTickets
Headlining the inaugral Lumianire/Blang night is Seth of Dufus - the founder and incomparable lead orchestrator of New York’s jazz pop metal funk easy listening choral psychedelic folk orchestral reggae improv freakshow; Seth Hebert-Faergolzia. Searching for the bag to file the ROIR Records collective into, reviewers often cite Frank Zappa, but that doesn’t account for the soul that is as much a part of their magic as the madness. Dufus are touring as a duo with Seth joined by Erin Riedel - one of the beautiful girls of the Dufus choir - on bass and vocals.
If they were comedy:
The Furry Freak Marx Brothers.
In technicolour.
With 3D surrow-wow-wownd sound.
Main support are Filthy Pedro and The Intolerable Kidd, now expanded to a duo with Anglesey’s psychedelic historian Simon Parry now joined by Thee Intolerable Kidd on bass and saw. For fans of impenetrable accents, intolerable magnificently moody sidekicks, lo-fi thrills and history lessons from a semi-naked man in a mask.
Comedian:
Krusty The Clown.
Before that we've Um; music hall techno from Cambridge’s electro-pop absurdist. Humour! Style! Hand-jiving! Furry hats!
If he were a comedian:
Peter Cook.
Opening proceedings is Lou Psyche. Playing as a duo tonight (with drummer), Lou is a superb songwriter playing skiffle punk heartbreak with razor sharp humour.
If she were a comedienne:
A Cockney Caroline Aherne.

Agaskodo Teliverek
(New duo feat. Miklos `The Accountant' Kemecsi (Adaadat))
Trashy off-kilter guitar-driven twisted electronic hard-rock
jungle-bebop breakbeat mashups! Think early 80s Fall guitar meets Casio
beats (something like the lost Hungarian descendents of `The Man Whose
Head Expanded'?). Live shows involve
live guitar/instruments plus cowboy gear, wet suits, Star Wars toy abuse
and impersonations of Barney Rubble ...
http://www.myspace.com/agaskodoteliverek
Ommm:
(Adaadat)
Ramshackle space-pop built out of freaky synths, 4-track tapes and old
drum machines put to a new use. His difficult to ignore live show
involves live synthesizer abuse,
audience participation and nonstop beats like a pinball table on
multi-ball triggering an 808. Ommm has previously collaborated with
labelmate DJ Scotch Egg and recently played for Bad Timing with Dyse and
Aotea.

THIS IS A PRIVATE PARTY!!!
(but I feel the need to document it since I'm playing records from 1976 only and Sam is going to be doing a set too).
Hello carefully selected potential guests,
On Friday the 21st of April, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be
celebrating her 80th Birthday. In honour of this special event, I will
be hosting a party at 8 Argyle Street, Cambridge from 8pm onwards, which
will provide an opportunity for us to rejoice in our everlasting love
and respect for our great monarch.
As luck would have it, it's my 30th Birthday at exactly the same moment.
The celebrations will take the form of a "1976 Party" at which you are
requested to dress in the style of the day. The Euro-famous pop star
and DJ Pete "Um" will be attempting to keep us entertained playing only
music that was released in that glorious year (with a special guest
appearance from the little known DJ Dyer).
Guests are invited to contribute the amount of alcohol (or whatever
their chosen poison might be) they deem appropriate to make the event
run smoothly.
Directions, should you require them, can be found here
http://tinyurl.com/nhc5r
It might be good if you could let me know if you're coming, especially
if you need a place to stay in Cambridge.
Looking forward to seeing you there...

UM

UM + Dave Jago + Hobopope & the Goldfish Cathedral + Manray +DJs Neil + Ken (from the Rehearsal Rooms) & Tom Watson
The Penguin Encyclopedia Of Rock says:
"Dave Jago does sort of operatic disco rock, with an MP3 player for backings, and his rockstar frontman thing. Hobopipe is sort of experimental stuff with Minidisc and guitar, bass and synth I think. One bloke. Him and Dave will join forces for one song. Manray is an all girl, shambolic, C86 style indie band, without drums or bass. They hammer a bass drum though sometimes. 3 DJs, from the rehearsal room."

Dear all,
Time for an update on Palimpsest Festival.....
KIILA CONFIRMED FOR PALIMPSEST
Harvest Time is very please to announce Kiila are to play Palimpsest. This will be their first English show ever! Kiila recently featured in The Wire on the extended 'Sub-Arctic Explorers' article based upon the Finnish underground music scene. Here is what Fonal Records have to say about the latest Kiila record:
'On the new album Silmät sulkaset, the band gently conjures up mildly otherworldly tunes with a peaceful air and feathered eyes. What was once free pop played by two is now free folk played by seven. The language of the songs has reverted back to Finnish, and the human voices rest on a warm texture of sounds from an array of acoustic and electronic instruments. Carefully arranged songs alternate with those improvised on the spot, all bearing the mark of a handcrafted article'.
For Palimpsest, Kiila will be playing a specially stripped down show.
In addition to the Harvest Time Records stall, there will now also be a stall from the prevalent underground Finnish label Fonal with releases by artists such as Kemialliset Ystavat and Isjala
There will be more info up at www.palimpsest-festival.co.uk soon. In the mean time you can check out www.fonal.com.
Please book tickets in advance as numbers are limited and they are going fast. All major credit cards accepted online at www.htrecords.co.uk. Tickets are being sent out 2 weeks before the show.
We look forward to seeing you there.
A full Harvest Time Records update and mail out will be with you by mid next week at the latest.
Bye for now.

Ariel Pink Bio
Ariel Pink (b. Ariel Rosenberg, June 1978) is an L.A.-based home taper who for years "fell out of bed onto [his] eight-track analog cassette Yamaha MT8X." He eventually wore down the unit, which succumbed, and Yamaha no longer makes it. "I now use whatever I can get my hands on," he laments, meaning cheap, scrounged-up equipment. "I can't spend money on gear, because I don't have any." He was influenced by the DIY ethic of R. Stevie Moore, with whom he subsequently became long-distance pals. Ariel has a great pop sensibility, and plays the "standard rock line-up of guitars, keys, bass, and vocals." Noticeably absent from that roll call are drums. In fact, Ariel makes all recorded drum and percussion sounds with his mouth! "It's a funny neurotic tic, which I honed since childhood," he explains. The punchy rhythms are achieved by close-miking. "Making sounds with my mouth is more acoustically akin to what i hear in my head than miking up real drums, which people spend hours on to get the right sonic effect.
Ariel has been in bands, but records by himself. (Personal estimate: 200-300 master tapes since 1995, comprising of over 500 songs.) He occasionally gigs out, but he's never felt that club dates reflect what his music is about, because his vision is intensely personal. Unlike some artistic cave-dwellers, Ariel gets along with people; he just doesn't often make music with them "It's what always ends up happening," he says. "Sometimes I get musicians offering their services but when it comes down to it, people just don't commit to joining my crusade. I have no idea why I'm alone! But writing is easier alone."

Panda Bear (Noah Lennox) is best known as the main songwriter and vocalist in Brooklyn's widely admired Animal Collective. When Animal Collective played Cambridge in October 2003 (as the core duo of Panda Bear and Avey Tare), they pulled off an unforgettable set, growing out of apparent guitar/drum/vocal chaos to an electric and emotional intensity which left the audience speechless (as well as instant converts). Gaining an ever-increasing reputation for their splicing of guitar/sonic randomness and Brian Wilson-inspired sundrenched rusticated harmonic folk, in 2004 they released an album Sung Tongs for Fat Cat and also toured with Múm.
Panda Bear released his first solo outing Young Prayer on in September 2004 on Paw Tracks, Animal Collective's own sub-label of NYC's Carpark (Greg Davis, Kid606 and others). Taking the scratchy, tangled lines of Animal Collective and his unique hyper/ventilated unsteady-but-pure vocal style, Young Prayer's bare, stripped down sound finds an intimate space to explore more introspective material, with frequently uplifting results.

ariel pink
(pawtracks)
Ariel Pink's music has been compared to many things recently, including Soft Pink Truth, Engelbert Humperdink, Fall demos and `tapes that've warped in the sun'.
Making his crooned karaoke-based pop in the darkest depths of LA, Ariel Pink takes classic `Lite FM' tunes and warps them into his uniquely lofi sound. His current release not only draws in lofi guitar fuzz but was mainly recorded at home on cassette on a basic setup of guitar, bass, keyboard and 8-track. His sound is beautiful, confusing but warm and sweetly addictive, as the classic-style pop traces and hooks shine through. Ariel Pink is the only non-Animal Collective artist to be signed to Paw Tracks and a new release, Worn Copy is due out in 2005.
signer
(carpark)
Signer is New Zealand's Bevan Smith. Crafting proper fuzzed-out pop gems around shifting bass/effects-heavy textures. On his latest Carpark release The New Face of Smiling the sound echoes My Bloody Valentine guitar-scapes at its core but reaches out into more rhythmic and definite vocal songs with hints of Four Tet, Flying Saucer Attack or Mogwai.

BACKGROUND - SPUKHAFTE FERNWIRKUNGEN
Spukhafte Fernwirkungen are Hackney based and this provides the point of
departure for A Special Occasion. The event is designed as an evening of
cabaret, which takes place on the physical boundaries of the Borough and
explores its jittery glamorous personality past and present. Spukhafte
Fernwirkungen pursue a curatory path of gathering fresh as well as
established talent from the area and inciting an interaction with
established traditions and idiosyncrasies inside a gem of local
architecture. The evening is a tribute to Hackney's continuous flow of
change and consolidation, by enjoying and rejoicing in a carefree evening of
quality entertainment.
The Mildmay, a 1880 Working Men's Club has been secured as the hosting
venue, and its management committee has indicated its full support for A
Special Occasion. With the location at the heart of the event's concept, the
programme has been designed for local participation.
A Special Occasion grasps the core of Hackney as studying borough's history
and culture discloses that enjoying a special night out, and pursuing strong
interaction with fellow citizens has always been a fundamental character
trait of Hackney lifestyle. On the quest for the identity of the Borough,
provocatively choosing a location on its border with Islington, A Special
Occasion brings artists to participate in reviving historical links of
locations and forms of entertainment. The audience are treated to an
extraordinary selection of unique acts of amusement and enjoy the benefits
generated by shared enjoyment.
A Special Occasion cherishes Hackney's identity and makes its changing face
visible, using an old-fashioned (but reviving) form of entertainment -
cabaret. Hackney based performers from a range of artistic backgrounds get
the opportunity to find a local angle to their work and present this in
front of the audience that nurtured the composition in the first place. The
public comes to see outstanding Hackney cabaret acts that reflect their
immediate surroundings and the culture and diversity of the Borough.

Statement...
Hardly ever are we in the presence,
nearly always in some possible future
or in the past,
although we
always live in the presence. Taken by what was
and what may or could be,
we are able to part from that which is now, that which surrounds us...
...but then...
Nearly Nothing differentiates the simplicity from the ordinary life,
other than the recognition
that one is,
one does
nothing special.
....If ....
Nothing Special implies to undo
the dualism of ............I and the World, .........Seeming and Being,
............Mind and Matter, ............Holy and Mundane,
..............Art and Life.
.... And this is the reason for A special Occasion....
This exactly is the Special of Being, of Mind, of the Holy and of Life,
NOTHING special but ungraspable, fluid, fluxus.DADA monsters

Eclectic: Cabaret At Cafe Afrika
Event Date: 11th February 2004
February sees the second "Eclectic: Cabaret at Cafe Afrika". After the storming
success of the first event in December, we're back with an eclectic mix of the
classic, contemporary and avant-garde.
Join the talented MC Simon Lee Morgan and enjoy some hyper-modern art rock,
mellow jazz tunes, experimental film, Arabic dance and some very special poetry.
First up, experience the energetic apathy of UM, rocking the joint with dark
tunes to jump, jive and swing to.
Filmmaker Barnaby will present a short audio-visual piece that's guaranteed to
attack the senses and stimulate the mind.
Between acts, DJ BBQ Dan will be playing some funky tunes. Punters will be
split between getting a drink and hitting the dancefloor.
The grooves will continue with Zia's exotic and expressive Persian and Arabic
dance. The audience is destined to howl for more.
Straight after, discover some thought-provoking poetry from Brad, focussing on
workplace experiences and politics.
The night concludes with some Jazz tunes featured in some of Broadway's best
shows, sung by Lauren and keyboard accompaniment. Superb singing from a superb
performer.
Eclectic: Cabaret at Cafe Afrika is a semi-regular Cabaret night at
Cafe Afrika that will to bring you the most eclectic mix of art and
performance in the region.
Children are welcome, however, adult themes may be addressed by
performers so parental discretion is very much advised. The Cabaret
starts at 8pm, Wednesday the 11th of February. Three pounds on the

Yes, the whole Berlin trip got shelved. Might be being rescheduled for December. Till then I'm just going to lie back and keep my thoughts on England.
This gig is not happening now but this is what I wrote when I thought it was:
Don’t know a hell of a lot about this gig but I’ve always wanted to go to Berlin and pretend to be somebody else. It seems to be the 4th birthday party of some musical equipment business of some kind. This is what they say about it on their website:
Oct. 10th: Bordsynthese For our fourth birthday, SchneidersBuero has put together a party at the C-Base with friends and artists, inventors and technicians with electronic music from europes centers:Well known friends from Berlin (toktok, flowinimmo), artists from London (UM, KRUBURN) some of Viennas prominents (gameboy music club, Herbert Weixelbaum), musicians from Frankfurt(Voiceheads) and VJ Michael Junck will deliver the lineup for one of the first concert nights in the C-Base mainhall next to the spree river.Between 9 and 10 pm admission is free and afterwards it costs only 8 Euros for all non-members of the club. www.c-base.org

LATE AT TATE
Ricky Spontane:
If Modigliani formed a garage band with George Formby and Fats Domino, it would sound something like the legendary Ricky Spontane. Described in the MNE as a 'throbbingly hot (if hideously ramshackle) band who crudely hammer rockabilly, skiffle, Jarvo-esque English lyrical whimsy and a post-Elvis / pre-Beatles early-'60s Britpop Mk 1 sensibility to the chugga- thumpa buzzsaw skippety-hop of primitive punk'
http://www.lowsleysound.co.uk/index2/index2.htm
UM:
Pete UM a.k.a UM, considers himself a ‘Community Popstar’. Performing his idiosyncratic brand of experimental entertainment, his music has been described as ‘the musical lovechild of Ray Davies and Genesis P Orridge’. He produces amateurish free-association lo-fi sound-collages using various sound-making devices which become the backing tapes for array of sad and funny songs that sound like they've broken on the way to the speakers. In the same way that Bushmen hunters mimic the movements of their prey as they walk in their footsteps, UM feeds on the audience's collective urge to be entertained by something new.
www.umbusiness.co.uk
Master:
Master is a collaborative project between three Nottingham based artists. They describe their performances as 'sonic experiments', however, instead of the usual high technological approach that might be more readily associated with contemporary sonic art, they draw on the simple structures of traditional folk music. Using an assortment of instruments including banjo's, ukulele's, clarinet's and on some occasions wooden toys, they create odd unsettling noise which they define as 'tea-fuelled nu-bastard amateur rap'

Microphones
Scout Niblett
April 12th March The Arts Cafe The Microphones are a one-man band in which Phil Elvrum (Old Time Relijun, D+) makes soft, psychedelic nylon-stringed guitar jangle sound both humble and heroic. While operating in an all-analog "lo-fi" mode, in the vein of Elephant 6 collective bands such as Olivia Tremor Control, Elvrum's no wannabe. All the musical elements gel with concept and breathe with the sort of spooky, misty clarity that arguably can only be captured in an intimate, non-digital production.
With his voice warm and reserved theres something invitingly amateurish about Elvrum's songs. They sound almost as if they were never meant to be heard, utterances of the heart bereft of any conscious artistry, relying on their own inherent beauty. The solitary quality of the Microphones could be compared to that of Bright Eyes, Syd Barrett, and Graeme Jefferies. Songs about small towns, birds, the sea. Simple, elemental things imbuded with their own preciousness, in the eyes of Elvrum weaving them into his songs. Lo-fi in both sound and virtue, and not to be missed.
Scout Niblett
From the Half Japanese school of music-making, and sounding like early Cat Power or PJ Harvey, Scout Niblett heralds the amateur's capacity for imaginative experience.

Named after after the modern gentleman's publication which offers advice on the semiotics of smoking and has a "sartorial agony" page, London's The Chap make `pop songs with lyrics about courage, modesty, sex and asthma' backed with driving krautrock- new wave-disco with strings and cut-up beats. Defying any easy comparisons, sonically The Chap maybe come on something like an update on Wire meets early Stereolab, with similarities to retro-futurist labelmate Cursor Miner.
NME's review of their recent `I Got Flattened by a Pig Farmer' 7" described The Chap as `a truly far out music that embraces novelty, bunks up with surrealism and gives birth to freakish Dadaist disco babies. You'll love it but you sure won't understand it.'
The Chap return to Bad Timing as part of their first UK tour.

No real idea as to what this is about or who else is playing but I suspect its some kind of pre-Good Times event.
Tripel records are an independent record company run
by obsessive music junkies Dave Henson and Andrew
Coleman. One fine evening out on the town the idea to
start a record label came up. This moment of clarity
spawned an obsession and with the help of friends,
quality kung fu videos, personal introverted
psychological battles and various worldly pleasures a
peace of mind was established and thus a record label
was born.
Tripel records plans to release electronic music
created by three individual artists who are
desperately trying to keep it together by escaping the
mundane routine of a "9 to 5" working lifestyle.
At Tripel records we believe that electronic music is
not a style of music but a method of working. This
chosen method allows us the freedom to compose and
produce music, which is personal to us and hopefully
relevant to you!
Artists
Ascoltare
New name and work from Dave Henson, a mentalist
individual who has realised that in order for himself
to remain relatively sane he must abandon music
altogether. However, the likelihood of this scenario
feels impossible for a sensitive man whose love of
music weighs far more important than a harboured
mental disposition. Ascoltare (from fhe Italian word
for `to listen') is fine-grained and structured
electronica with environmental and acoustic samples
giving a spatial and organic feel. As well as
continuing the explorations of melody of his previous
work in Mouse Finding The Key and Gwei-Lo, Ascoltare
has a diversity encompassing excursions into abstract
dub and experimental texture.
The Arbury Hum
An agent of chance whose latest sonic excursions
employ the ideas found from equipment failure, micro
sounds, field recordings, noise and minimal music.
Andrew Coleman
Andrew Coleman is perhaps best known for his alter ego
Animals on Wheels. Under that moniker, he has released
two albums and an EP for the highly respected Ninja
Tune label, in addition to numerous 12"s and
compilation appearances on his own landmark Bovinyl
imprint. Along with Bovinyl mate Adam 'Vert' Butler,
Coleman was largely responsible for the UK jungle
offshoot 'drill n' bass' scene. Gone are the
rapid-fire breakbeats and abrupt mood shifts of the
past. Instead, Coleman has emphasized the rich melodic
textures that always held the foundation of his best
work.

Wednesday 4th December 2002: Bad Timing Christmas Party with V/Vm
Wearing pig masks and chicken suits and coming on like a smalltown chart covers act from hell (their show includes dispensing cabbage and roses into the audience), Stockport's V/VM make the best worst pop albums in the world ever.
Their `Sick Love' collection includes all the Shakin' Stevens, Chris de Burgh, Robbie Williams and Gareth Gates songs you never wanted to hear again, butchered and mechanically recovered like you've never heard them before, with results that are both truly terrible and horribly familiar. And what Christmas party would be complete without classic versions like `Missingtoe and Whine' and `Last Christmess'?
Making a very rare live appearance for Bad Timing, V/VM have previously shared bills with Sonic Youth, and Aphex Twin and collaborations with copyright violators worldwide include People Like Us, Stockhausen and Walkman and Kid606.
Plus Um, DJ Chuck Schuldiner, Kirk Leatham (presents the Christmas Spirit), bad timing regulars and *all* the trimmings ...
Advance warning: V/VM have specifically requested strobe lighting for their set. Sorry to those this affects.
'An Evening of Psychedelic Drone Music'.
"It will also have projection and lights from Chris Massey-Lynch and plenty of rugs, joss sticks singing bowls and spaced heads!"
So I'm doing a drone set!

MADAM
JACK HAYTER
UM
MADAM is the gorgeous Sukie Smith's band. Cushy aficionados will remember her playing for us a couple of years ago, but her other life as an actress has kept her too busy to play music recently despite a few attempts to coax her down. At last she and friends Adam Franklin -ex Swervedriver -guitars, Gavin Pearse - ex Minxus -guitars keyboards, Chris Clarke -ex Rockingbirds- bass and Jeff Townsin -Sophia on drums will augment her sparse intense alt/folk songs. Think a brunette Marianne Faithful circa Broken English.
JACK HAYTER is one of those musicians whose enthusiasm and soul add depth and texture to every band and record he works on. Most of you will know him as the lap steel, guitar, keyboard and harmonica accompaniment in HEFNER in recent years, but he has also worked with among others; TRAM, MARK MULCAHY, BITTER SPRINGS, RHATIGAN and SPONGE FINGER. At last he is releasing his solo album which he recorded with Darren Hayman. It is called 'PRACTICAL WIRELESS' and will come out imminently on Kosher records distributed by Shell Shocked here and it is garnering rave reviews in America and healthy radio play on College stations. It has that lofi quirky folk tilt you might expect. Great stories great playing, great. http://www.jackovision.com
Who on earth is UM, you may ask. Well, when my friend David McGinnis, the man behind the recent HINTERLAND evenings emailed me about him, I was intrigued... "A couple of weeks ago I saw an amazing performance by an act from Cambridge called Um. It's just one guy, Pete Gregory, and it was his first London appearance. He was supporting my friends Lomax after being 'discovered' doing his bizarre show at an acoustic night in Cambridge. I strongly recommend checking him out and booking him if you have a free slot. He has something out through the Burning Shed label (web sales only) and I think he has given some stuff to charity shops in Cambridge to sell. He sings/talks/mc's over tapes of himself singing/talking/mc-ing with cracked up synth/electronic backing. He is quite tall, has a box full of hats, a toy monkey and does very entertaining dancing. He will be a great addition to any bill. Honestly, my jaw was on the floor." Need I say more? http://www.umbusiness.co.uk

I'm including this after the fact so I'm not sure if I've got the date right or whatever. I just wanted to record the fact that I played such an unrock gig and that it was bleedin' awful, although the video that Daniela took is damn funny when she focuses shamelessly on the faces of the five or six people who are shifting uncomfortably on their plastic chairs and under the fluorsecent light wishing they were anywhere, anywhere but there at The Alex Wood Hall. Only time I've ever been embarrassed onstage. I blushed. Usually I like to do unlikely gigs because I can mine the situation for dumb funniness, but this gig proved to me that sometimes there is no grist.

Club Fasterdaddy presents
THE FOLK ORCHESTRA vs. THE BROKEN FAMILY BAND
with guest referee: UM
This is the last ever Club Fasterdaddy show, featuring two giants of diluted 'roots' music lamely competing for the coveted FIVE POUND championship prize.
MARVEL as The Folk Orchestra stumble pathetically over their poncey instruments... GASP as The Broken Family Band feebly try to subvert an already tired genre... SIGH as these unisex musical failures rub your noses in their seedy personal noodlings... never before have alternative rock 'n roll, Romanian folk, punk and country music been allowed to fight it out in such a tiny space so pointlessly and with so little regard for feminine hygiene.
Expect tears of pure vomit to slide greasily down the sweaty cheeks of the evening's compere, as he gamely tries to conceal his shrivelled testes from the prying eyes of the deviant musicans, whilst singing some crap about goats over tapes.
No wonder its all over for Club Fasterdaddy; two years of superb quality pop concerts down the drain. Still, there's free food for everyone, a prize-giving ceremony at the end of the evening featuring a really cheap strip-o-gram, and a free balloon for every child under 6 (subject to availability).

4 skinny boys straight outta Southampton on a mission to win the world with their own brand of lo-fi. Formed by Michael Gale, the songs were originally intended for a solo project inspired by Deus, Sparklehorse and Grandaddy. Members of his previous band heard the songs and liked em so much they came flocking back. The LP 'Still Life Hear Me' was released in November 2001 with the inkies slavering over it and peel, lamacq and radcliffe all played tracks from it. There's a nice picture of a zebra on the sleeve.

Oxford – Cambridge All Dayer @ The Portland Arms. Saturday 30.03.02
“Any band that name themselves after a monkey and write a song with the line 'you're Leia and I'm Han Solo' ('Easy Tiger') are Okay with me. So it's a bonus that Cambridge's Right Turn Clyde come armed to the teeth with cracking emo-punk melodies too. Formed from the ashes of Hofman and The Saffs, RTC are one of those bands that can make a punk song sound like the most joyous three minutes of your life. And they do it with every track on '3'. 'Girls R Evil'is probably the pick of the bunch but there's really not much in it, as this is wall-to-wall quality.” KKKKK - Mark Griffiths

‘machines can make noises to fill the silence…’
The Cathode Ray Syndrome are fully paid up members of the post rock brigade, but with a manifesto and bile that’s all their own.
Formed in 2000 they have been wowing audiences in Cambridge on a regular basis since. An increasing maturity and clarity of vision has seen them shake off the shackles of the (un) holy trinity of mogwai and godspeed comparisons to forge their own path.

UM
can you use instruments in audio mulch? sure can, read the help file...sometimes those things can help.
UM, aka Pete Popstar is Cambridge’s premier electronic surrealist. Songs varying from mock ragga vocalising (‘boom titty ass, titty windy wind’) to intense introspection are all fair game with some of the most disorientating array of beats and noises since Mr. Richard D James last put sandpaper to record stylus. Make this man a star. Please.
The Young Knives
Little is known of these Oxford newcomers, formerly known as Ponyclub. ‘…the English Strokes, but with a sense of humour…’ was how one pundit described them. They are very 1979, Pere Ubu and even very early Supergrass. They are a three piece (Henry, Ollie and The House Of Lords) come from the Midlands but moved to Oxford about 3 years ago.
Dustball formed in 1995 and soon became an important part of the burgeoning Oxford music scene, finding ourselves under the microscope of a number of record companies before local indie label Rotator swooped to put us onto OXCD, a compilation of the area's best new bands.
The track, 'Yeah Yeah Yeah', served as an example of what was to come, as the nascent Shifty Disco label made us the first singles club release with an anthem to male pregnancy known as 'Senor Nachos'.
Dustball were picked as one of the four priority bands to be broadcast on Steve Lamacq's Evening Session as part of Radio 1's Sound City 1997. A joint EP ('A Quick One Too') with NØUGHT was released to coincide with the event, and attracted the attentions of John Peel, for whom we have recorded three sessions.
The album, Quality But Hers, appeared in special silver ball packaging in 1998. They split briefly but, joined by ace former Unbelievable Truth drummer Nigel Powell. they've come back stronger than ever with a whole host of new songs to show off.
Not shy since then and with a desire to play live, we have been seen in the past few months at the Oxford Punt, the Truck Festival, and Shelter benefit AUDIOSCOPE among other live dates.

Yeah! Drugs! Rock and Roll! Six Ray Sun! Penguins! Hong Kong!
Straddling the divide between Hong Kong and the Home Counties, Six Ray Sun came together through a shared love of Suicide and Spiritualized. Four young men, two from the Far East, two from the South East spending twelve months constructing strange machinery in the radioactive sewers where Primal Scream's 'XTMNTR' is the closest thing to a national anthem, before emerging like mutant cyborg pop rats, armed with a clutch of violent cartoon-obsessed synthetic rock songs. Well anyway, two friends from Hong Kong, Justin’s Chau and Sweeting, met Andrew Gannon and Leigh Cohen at Bath University, which is a bit like a radioactive futuristic sewer, but with more prohibitive property prices, before relocating to Oxford and
forging their expansive form of sleek machine-driven music, Andrew's cocksure vocal style adding a human element to proceedings. 'Bad Batz Maru', named after the naughtiest penguin in Japan, is the debut outing for the band already hailed by Steve Lamacq as one of the best unsigned acts in the country on his 'Sessions Unsigned' slot. For more info go to www.sixraysun.com
South Sea Company Prospectus
Arrived in the wake of The Rock of Travolta, armed with an opulent array of unheard film scores and the soundtrack to an as yet unmade computer game involving mutant surfers riding a tidal wave into Hong Kong harbour. Part Death in Vegas, part Six By Seven, part Man or Astroman. Blinding stuff.
Neo
Yet more ex Saffs, this time ditching the day glo pop punk that brought him infamy. Greg took the darker side of neo and made it more wiry and tense and then recruited Kirsty and Brother Glen to form a shady and melodic shadow on the Cambridge scene.
Persil + Um + Pretty + Jozaq
Saturday 21st March 2002 @ The Portland Arms. £3.
Amsterdam husband & wife duo Persil second UK release following 2000's 'Agony Aunt' single. This is what the press have said:
'a burst of alluringly offbeat, synth assisted brilliance - more please!' Time Out
'off kilter, but utterly charming' Record Collector
'sounds more like Blondie than Blondie do now ' Guardian Guide
'strangely wonderful' NME
'squidy squidy squidy squidy, tingtingy doingydoingy .. ah. ' The Fly
The band recorded a session for Peel during their UK tour in 2000. This EP features a cover of the Wedding Present's "Kennedy" which has already been played by Uncle John. The last single was played heavily on both Peel's show and the Evening Session.
Not surprisingly they were asked to do and have just done a new Peel session in March when they will come over to the UK for a short tour to promote this EP release.
Support comes from the finest oddball selection Cambridge can muster. First on will be the bass led antics of Jozaq, which is the one man oddity that is Trevor ex of Cambridge wierdos Nyugati Palyaudvar. Expect nothing and everything from this man.
Next up is the electro/synth pop of Pretty. Pretty started out as a noisy guitar band and then shed most of the band, bought some samplers and completely re-invented themselves. Acidic squelches, smiths-esque lyricisms and a keen ear for a pop tune.
The main support is Um: The name says it all. confusion and a stream of conciousness lyrical style are married to rephlex/warp records style electronica. Make this man a star.

Yes, the long-awaited Hugo's Mixed Fruit Jam* comeback tour is upon us, or sort of. UM will be attempting to reward attendees with a heterogeneous mix of experimental entertainment styles somewhere between performance art and nowhere, or singing-along-to-tapes as it has become known. The usual mirthless ear-pain, plus embarrassing interludes of spoken word, pointless showcasing of humdrum instrumental pieces, performance-dithering and a little sharing-session involving items from the silly section of my record collection. I cannot speak on behalf of Elias Bland, but the historically-minded amongst you will recall that I used to be in a band with a terrible name along with Rupert. There will also be challenging DJs. * A band with a terrible name.
Once again this gig has been added to the gigography well after the event and my recollections of details are hazy. I believe Kev Laska DJed and I was a bit shit.

Rob plays mellow instrumental music on an electric guitar. Clara sings contemporary Folk songs and plays an acoustic guitar. Pete performs songs, verging on poetry like you've never heard before. Quality and diversity from Cambridge music scene in the pleasant and atmospheric environment of the CB2 basement. Food also available, so get there early to grab a table.
Cost, not more that £3 I think. It will be nice, please come.
including an UM performance and showing of recent UM video work, plus the music of various other Cambridge-based musicians, including Rob Jesus and Dharma Cola. Unconfirmed acts include Mouse Finding The Key & Sly Chimp.
12 hours of continuous music mixed live. A unique and wonderful chance to hear a more representative selection from UM's catalogue of over 1500 recordings.
A digital camera will take a two second clip every one minute, ending up with, uh…roughly half an hour of disjointed nonsense. During the day very few people will come and it will be somewhat dull (tea and biscuits are provided).
Vast majority of the music will just be instrumental pieces from a variety of formats, including nasty old four-track stuff, so you have been warned. A proper performance with singing and stuff will take place at about 9PM (maybe a couple of sets, I don't know).
I'm planning to buy some red wine and some vodka. It's a sort of a pointless Warhol thing, and maybe a gentle dig at the usual Open Studio thing.
Please don't pitch up late and ring the bell endlessly (I haven't told my housemates about this yet) - just come round the back.
Mouse Finding The Key/Delegates Of Culture/ DJ action from Sly Chimp/Um
Another showcase for members of the Live Experimental Arts Performance Society. Also featuring Pence Eleven & Captain Rokk Hopefully I'm going to screen a short film too.
Year Of The Artist performance with Rob Jesus & a special and rare DJ set from Andrew Coleman (Thrill Jockey, Ninja Tune).
This gig will be filmed for the online gig archives at the Portland Arms by the video production crew , and also by Jon Enkel, the ex-BBC cameraman who works at CamArt where UM is the artist in residence.
Drunken mixing and 80's pop, or shamanic ritual? Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Peaches, Telex, Chicks On Speed and other stuff.
Um news.
A last minute addition to the relentless Um touring schedule:
3-2-01 Man On The Moon, Norfolk Street Cambridge. This is this Saturday.
Um will be supported by Dans Ma Salon (a.k.a "Dimitri")
and:
a special pot luck selection of Middle Class Records artistes, the label that brought you Pence Eleven, so we might have Nathan's Bad Loops project (manipulation of CD players loop function), or Nes.Co (maybe this is the same thing, I'm never sure with Middle Class) or maybe THF Drenching or Menasor or even Dallas Boner.
Anyway, this gig has received little publicity, will not be well-attended, and will be over-wrought and disquieting.
Oh yeah there will be crap films in the background.
Usual scenario
Me, Jamie, Susan and Louisa playing records.
UM brings "Bad Times" to "Good Times".

I have found evidence that I played a gig on this date. I don't know where or who with or whatever.
